Teacher Workshop: Teaching Genocide through Art

The Current’s annual free Rock the Cradle event for kids and their grown-ups to explore music, art, and culture returns to Mia and Children’s Theatre Company.

Give discarded magazines new life as you turn them into works of art! We’ll explore the medium of collage with a painterly approach. Local artist Hannah Frick will lead with demos of materials and methods, and will share tips and tricks along the way as you create your own unique collages. In class we&#8217;ll cover color exploration and palette building. You&#8217;ll make art inspired by pieces in Mia&#8217;s collection and create a portrait of your own furry friend (or any special image of your choosing). The majority of our time will consist of studio work time but will also include opportunities for group critique and feedback, as well as individual instruction.

Art can be a tangible visual archive of the past, providing a gateway into a deeper understanding of people who experienced unspeakable events. As such, it&#8217;s a powerful tool for teaching about the Holocaust and genocide. In a classroom setting, art can help provide context and background for students, without exposing them to potentially traumatizing images of violence.
Join the University of Minnesota&#8217;s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, St. Cloud State University&#8217;s Center for Holocaust and Genocide Education, and Mia for a daylong educator workshop that uses art as a classroom resource for exploring the Holocaust and other genocides. During this workshop, you&#8217;ll have an opportunity to visit Mia’s galleries and special exhibition, &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/modern-art-politics-germany-1910-1945">Modern Art and Politics in Germany 1910–1945: Masterworks from the Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin</a>,&#8221; and learn about effective strategies for incorporating art into classroom lessons. You&#8217;ll leave with a lesson plan for teaching about genocide through art.
This workshop is primarily geared toward Minnesota middle and high school teachers and is tailored to meet Minnesota&#8217;s new social studies standards and requirements for Holocaust and genocide education in middle and high school. You&#8217;ll receive five hours of CEU credit from the Minnesota Council for the Social Studies.
Lunch is provided; space is limited to 20 participants.

Join two-time Tony Award–winning artist John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch and currently starring in Oh, Mary! on Broadway) for an intimate talk examining the lives and work of Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore—Surrealist artists, lifelong partners, and courageous resisters of Nazi occupation.
Blending personal reflection with performance excerpts from his in-development theatrical work LSM (the initials Cahun and Moore used to sign their letters), Mitchell invites audiences into the years-long research that has shaped his engagement with the pair. The program explores their radical approach to self-portraiture, authorship, and identity, and how their acts of resistance during World War II continue to resonate in contemporary conversations about art, gender, and power.
Mitchell will perform short excerpts from LSM, interwoven with his personal reflections on the rigor of his archival research and the artistic and emotional bond between the two women. He examines how they used image, text, and persona to destabilize fixed notions of identity, and how their creative lives became acts of political resistance.

Experience different aspects of Minnesota each week, from state pastimes like cornhole and the State Fair, to local artist collectives and celebration of identity.
